Death Date: 11/16/2001
Washington Park East Cemetery
Garden of Freedom, Lot 43, Grave 1

Hubert Andrew Hoffman was born August 1, 1924, in Brazil, Indiana. He attended Staunton High School and graduated in 1942. He enlisted in the US Army in May 1944 and served in World War II in Western Europe until January 1946. He returned to Brazil after leaving the army and worked for Kroger grocery store. He obtained a job with Eli Lilly Company in 1950. He worked in the biological research laboratories at the McCarty Street facilities until his retirement in December 1986. As a senior research laboratory technician, he worked on several experimental drugs during their testing and development stages. His contributions to various vaccine projects benefited countless individuals in protecting them from disease.

Hubert was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 264 in Brazil, Indiana for over 50 years. Hubert was raised in a family that had strong musical interests. He played the accordion in his youth and the baritone throughout his life. He was a member of the Jackson Township Band, Sahara Grotto Band, Murat Shrine, 40 and 8 Band and Windjammer Unlimited Concert Band. He was a member of the American Legion No. 264, the Scottish Rite, and Old Bethel Methodist Church.
In October 1980, Hubert contracted Legionnaire's Disease but recovered after a six-week hospital stay. His respiratory problems did not become physically evident again until he suffered a minor stroke in February 1999. His respiratory gradually worsened, and was hospitalized on November 1, 2001. The doctors diagnosed him with an unknown respiratory disease that caused a scarring of his lung tissue, resulting in severe pulmonary hypertension. He passed away on November 16, 2001, with his wife and daughter at his side.
