Death Date: 3/17/1990
Washington Park East Cemetery
Section G, Lot 40, Grave 9

Howard was born in Indianapolis and his family moved to Florida when he was very young. After spending several years in Orlando, the family returned to Indianapolis where Howard spent his school years. He graduated Shortridge High School in 1943 and Herron School of Art in 1951 with a BA degree and later received a MFA from Herron School of Art, Indiana University. He taught art at DePauw University from 1951-1952 and MacMurray College, Jacksonville, Illinois from 1953-1984, retiring as professor emeritus. He served in the US Army from 1943-1945 in the ETO, including the Battle of the Bulge. The many fine tributes given to Howard from eulogies at his memorial service are quoted here: 'Howard's bond of friendship could be seen in his intense loyalty. He was very protective of the people he loved, and was moved to anger when they were threatened. To say that Howard loved art would be an understatement. His reverence for the potential in others was boundless.''Howard was an exceptionally fine teacher. He was an excellent art historian. His abstract works of art betray his fine sense and mastery of the art of drawing. It was very easy to work with him. His cooperation was complete and cheerfully offered. He had a good sense of humor, and even when things looked dark, he could summon a smile and a wry comment that indicated his spirit was not defeated. Howard was a modest person, without an ounce of pretense in his make up. We commemorate and honor the memory of a master teacher, a disciplined artist.'
