Charles J. Buchanan & Anna Phoebe Flanner BuchananCharles: Aug. 31, 1856 - Sept. 14, 1930 Anna: April 12, 1858 - April 20, 1945Buried: Crown Hill CemeteryMemorialized: Cumberland Trail Washington Park East CemeteryCharles grew up on his father's (John Buchanan) farm, near Cumberland, Indiana. John's father David Buchanan moved to Cumberland shortly after Indiana achieved statehood in 1823.Charles married Anna P. Flanner in Dent County, Missouri, on Sept. 3, 1884. Anna's brother, Frank W. Flanner, used some of his father's Civil War pension money to start his undertaking business around 1881. He had various partners until 1887 when Charles became his partner in the business and Flanner and Buchanan was born. In Anna's family history book she described Charles as the smartest one in the family. She also said the family just barely had enough money to get by in the early days. Anna's mother turned their home at New York and Meridian Streets into a boarding house to make extra money. Those were hard times.Charles and Frank persevered and built Indianapolis's premier funeral business at a time when the funeral professional was still quite young. Anna, became known as one of the state's best Sunday School teachers. Hundreds attended her classes that from time to time received a write up in the newspaper. Many family and friends will remember the summer home the couple built around 1898 on Tippecanoe Lake in Northern Indiana. Charles was an avid horseman and maintained a stable at Lake Tippecanoe and on the grounds of the Indiana State Fair. Charles and Anna leave a legacy of being family oriented, civic minded, God-loving members of their community.Children: Paul H. Buchanan, Sr. Albert Buchanan
