Mary B. Elliott's EulogyGiven by her daughter, Mary Beth Elliott BrendOur mother grew up during the depression. Her father died when she and her twin sister, Martha, were four years old. Mary and Martha had very little as children. There were times when they could not afford new shoes. My mom learned a lot about surviving during those times, but even with her humble beginnings, she didn't let it harden her.She taught us many lessons, but most importantly, she taught us by example. She made sure we knew that being selfish was not a Christian virtue and she showed us by always helping others. My mom would rearrange her schedule if she knew you needed her. After she retired, she began volunteering for Meals on Wheels; she joined the Daughters of the American Revolution and was later elected treasurer of her Chapter. We also learned a lot about honesty being the best policy. Take it from me; if you lied to her once and was caught, you never did that again. Most importantly, we learned about family and friends being the most important things in life, and I am now finding they are the most important things in death. We could not have got through this without all of the love from you and I now know that my mom made sure we would have you here to help us.As I prepare to do the hardest thing of my life, I take comfort in knowing that my mom is with her maker. Although this is not giving me great peace right now because I miss her so much, I know that in time she will make sure that everything will be all right.
