Death Date: 8/6/2001
Washington Park East Cemetery
Section J, Lot 108, Grave 15

Francis Henry Surprenant was born August 2, 1914. He was nicknamed Harry after a favorite uncle and most people knew him as Harry. He has two brothers and three sisters, all but one of them lived into their 80's. Following World War 2, while completing his stint in the army, he met and married Louise Killion on January 5, 1946, thereby becoming a part of the wonderful Killion family. Louise and Harry had three daughters, Kay, Doris and Paula. Years later, after having endured three daughters in a row, Harry was finally blessed with two son-in-laws, Dick and Tom, and then three grandsons, Eric, Danny and Brad. Yes, that's right; Tom, Dick and Harry were now part of the same family. In fact, his brother-in-law, Paul Smoot, always liked to proclaim that the Surprenants let every Tom, Dick and Harry into their family.Harry and Louise believed in family, hard work, respect for others and despite a difference in religion, a basic belief in a loving God. They lived simply, worked hard, and enjoyed the simple pleasures. Harry would take his daughters to the park on Sunday after church or to the cemetery to tend the family graves. Sometimes he would take them to the train station in Kankakee to meet Paul's train. At those times he always had time for a swing around the corner to Jaffe's Drug Store for a Green River, cherry coke, or an ice cream cone from the soda fountain. Not only did he allow his grandsons to do things he would not allow his daughters to do, but he actually taught them to do these things.Harry enjoyed the Killion family reunions, especially the food, and particularly when it was served on time!Harry enjoyed a healthy life for most all of his 87 years and still had an interest in living as only a Cubs fan can, waiting for another pennant race. When it became apparent that Harry might not survive, Dick called Holy Spirit Catholic Church to arrange for the service. Reverend Joseph Riedman, Pastor, agreed to officiate. However, when the date and time were set Father Reidman already had a commitment. He stated that he would find someone to take his place. He sent associate pastor, Father Tully. Father Tully, like Dad, was born in August. Father Tully's name is Henry Francis Tully. Dad's name is Francis Henry. Father Tully's sermon (of his own choosing) centered on the 23rd Psalm, The Lord is My Shepherd. This inscription is carved on my parents' headstone.
