Louie L. Ooley was born on September 8, 1930 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was the first born of Louie E. and Ruth E. Sattler Ooley's six children. Louie, called Larry by family and friends, graduated in 1948 from Sacred Heart High School where he was a star football player. After graduating from Sacred Heart, he then attended Butler University where he also participated in the football program. After, Butler, Larry went to work for the New York Central Railroad as an Office Boy. His fascination with numbers quickly led to Larry's promotion as an Auditor for the NYC RR.In 1952, during the Korean War, Larry's Naval Reserve Unit was activated. Larry was assigned duty on the Admiral's staff serving primarily in the Mediterranean Sea. After, Korea, Larry returned to Indianapolis where he resumed his Auditor duties with the New York Central Railroad. After a few years with the railroad, Larry faced a dilemma, leave Indianapolis for either Detroit or New York City or leave the NYC RR. Larry chose to leave to NYC RR. Larry's decision to leave the New York Central Railroad was followed by several sales jobs ranging from beauty supplies to automobiles. Then in 1960, Larry was given an opportunity to join the Indianapolis Fire Department. Larry's career with IFD spanned 22 very colorful year; most of those served at the old Station 13 located right downtown at 56 S. Senate Avenue. His service covered many different areas. Since Larry was quite a good cook, one duty he particularly enjoyed was preparing the meals at the firehouse. After his retirement from the IFD, Larry then worked for 9 years in security at St. Francis Hospital. In October 2000, Larry finally married his long ago sweetheart of 39 years, Shirley Jean Brown. Larry and Shirley then had their marriage solemnized on April 21, 2001 at Sacred Heart Church. Theirs was the last marriage solemnized at Sacred Heart Church before it was consumed by fire on April 27,2001.
