Loretta Anne Derleth McCarthy was the youngest of five children, born to George and Emelia Weber Derleth on February 17, 1907. The family lived at 426 W. McCarty Street; George's grocery and meat market, 'Derleth's,' was on the first floor and the family lived on the second floor. When Loretta was 16, the family moved to the 'suburbs' near Garfield Park. Loretta attended grade school and a two-year business course at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. On June 6, 1928, she married C. Francis 'Fran' McCarthy and they lived in the Derleth family home at 1302 Comer Ave. Loretta and Fran had three children: Joan, Davis and Robert. They loved to travel, and California was one of their favorite destinations. Fran died on September 28, 1959 because of lung cancer. Loretta faced another heartbreaking loss when David died of a heart attack on September 7, 1977.After her children were grown, Loretta worked for Charles McCahill, a contractor, the city of Indianapolis, and the Indianapolis Police Department. In 1963, the State of Indiana bought her home on Comer Avenue to make way for Interstate 65, and Loretta went to live with Joan's family in Beech Grove, quickly becoming 'Gram' to all the neighborhood kids. She loved spending time with her 12 grandchildren, often taking them to Dairy Queen for Dilly Bars. Today, the family continues to celebrate her memory with Dilly Bars at family get-togethers! When her great grandchildren came along, she didn't like the sound of 'great Grandma,' so she became 'GG' to all.Loretta often picked up her friends in her little red car for dinner on Friday night at the Knights of Columbus Council 3660. She continued to enjoy traveling, especially trips to New Orleans to visit the Rafferty family. The Rafferty's had special family Mardi Gras and St. Patrick's Day celebration, and one year they chose Loretta to be their Bonnie Queen of the St. Patrick's Day celebration.Loretta moved to St. Paul's Hermitage in Beech Grove in 1984 and died there on June 25, 1991 at the age of 84. |
