In today's society, it has become very popular to be called an ordinary man. An ordinary man being one who works a steady job to provide for the family that he loves, remains faithful in his marriage, does the 'right thing' regarding God and Country, has never been in jail and always pays his bills. Our Dad: Dale Allen BaileyBorn just before the depression on February 13, 1924 in the small Hancock County Indiana town of Warrington, he was the fifth child of Gerald and Florence Bailey. Two brothers and four sisters preceded him in death. His baby brother Keith survives. While in high school he was elected president of the student council and was active in student government. He also had a lifelong love of music. After graduating from New Castle High School in 1942, he worked at a 'music store' selling records, instruments and sheet music. Big Band music was his favorite for the rest of his life; right up to the day he died. Especially Glenn Miller music. He taught himself to play the harmonica and later in his like took organ lessons. He became quite an accomplished player though never doing it for any other reason than his own enjoyment, and believe me he enjoyed it thoroughly! With the World at War, he was drafted into the Army and served with the 314th Field Artillery Battalion, 80th Division as an artillery spotter. He saw action in England, France, Belgium and Germany. He was discharged September 27, 1945 with the rank of Corporal. He returned to New Castle after the war where he married the former Geraldine Vannatta. They raised two daughter and two sons spreading them over a 15 year period.Dad retired from Allison's Division of General Motors in 1986 where he had been an auditor for r33 years. He did nothing after his retirement and always said, 'That's exactly the way I want it!'He loved his family, his music, and playing bingo. He was happiest when we were all home visiting, along with our families. We often had impromptu pizza parties on Friday nights, his treat. He might have been just an ordinary man to the world, but to us, his family, he will always be the EXTRAODRINARY father of our memories. He is forever loved and sorely missed. Good-bye Dad! |
