| Byron Lee "Duke" Dresbach was the last of three children born to Della Mae Carpenter Dresbach and Clark E. Dresbach. His first brother, Ralph Clark died shortly after birth. He began working on the railroad in 1940 and his very first day on the job he dressed so finely that they called him "Duke" and the nickname stuck. He rose through the ranks and eventually was a conductor until the time of his retirement. He was State Legislative Director for the Order of Railroad Conductors and Brakemen until the merger creating Conrail. He then became chairman of the United Transportation Union Local 1518. He was instrumental in retention of the Indiana Full Crew Law of 1972, which no longer exists. He attended Ball State and was an Army Air Corp. veteran. He married Cherita Ann Curtis Carr on September 8, 1969. They had two daughters, Sharon Kay and Dawn Ann, which were his pride and joy. He passed before his grandchildren were born but he would have spoiled them too. In 1949, he married Patricia Stout and had a son, Stephen Richard. Byron and Patricia were divorced. Stephen disappeared in June of 1970 in the Bermuda Triangle on a private boat, and there was not a trace found of him. His brother Robert Eugene passed away December 28, 1994. |
