Murray was born in Chicago, Illinois, and spent part of his childhood in Virginia. At Western Military Academy, he was an all around athlete, and excelled in track, swimming, cross-country and football. He was MVP, and won a full football scholarship to Northwestern University. He was a member of the team that won the Big Ten Football Championship in 1937. After graduation, he joined the National Guard, and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Army. He was awarded the 'Purple Heart' for injuries suffered while trying to capture a German soldier behind enemy lines. He served at Allied headquarters in England under Eisenhower, and rose to the rank of Captain. He married his English sweetheart, Joan Audrey, and brought her home to Illinois. He began a career in the food industry and finally settled down in Carmel, Indiana. He worked for Stokley VanCamp, as the private label frozen food manager. They raised their five children in a home near the twelfth tee of the Woodland Country Club, so Murray could play his beloved game of golf, and the children could excel in swimming. Murray won many club tournaments, and had a hole in one two times before he had to give up the game he had learned as a reward for caddying from the time he was 10 years old. In 1975 his wife, Joan died. In 1979 he retired, and married Betsy, combining families for a total of 11 children, and 19 grandchildren. In 1983, he suffered a massive stroke from which he never recovered. Throughout his whole life, he was a very special being who enjoyed people. |
