Grandpa was a railroad man. His love of the rails began during his childhood when he grew up as one of 11 children in the pumper station near St. Francisville, Illinois. Family pictures show the family playing and living along the tracks. Grandpa enlisted in the Navy and served during World War II. He told us many times his stories of the war, walking around Japan after the bomb, and how much he learned during those years. Grandpa came home from the service and began to work for the New York Central Railroad. During his years with the railroad, he also worked Penn Central and finally Conrail, retiring on July 4, 1986 as a communication signal supervisor. After retirement, Grandpa said that working was easier than retirement. He helped take care of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He worked for hours out in his garage designing and building everything from CD cabinets to toddler potty chairs to cute little reindeer to hang on the front door during Christmas. Grandpa could fix anything, a car, a fence and even cut a new door in a wall. There are countless people across the city of Indianapolis that think of my Grandpa as their own. He was the best Grandpa there ever was. Gene was also a member of the Garfield Christian Church, where he was an elder and Sunday School Teacher. He also did many other things at church. He worked with Boy Scouts with his son Wayne and helped with Cub Scouts with his son Michael. Everyone loved him very much.Written by his wife and family |
