George was born just south of old Washington Street in the complex of apartments housing the Romanian residents one street west of West St. His two younger brothers died at ages two and nine respectively. He excelled in swimming while in grade school #5, on the track team at old Manual High School, in amateur fast-pitch softball, and as a life-time bowler. George married his neighborhood sweetheart at the old Romanian Orthodox Church (a plaque on the canal walk just west of the Medal of Honor Memorial today marks the spot) on May 28, 1939. George achieved the rank of corporal in the Marine Corps serving from September 6, 1943 until his honorable discharge on April 24, 1946 with most of his service on the west coast. He retired as a production coordinator at Bryant Heating & Cooling in 1977 after 17 years. George was a long time member of American Legion Post #465.At his death he had been married over 48 years and had two children and five grandchildren. |
