Alma Eleanor White

Birth Date: 9/8/1926
Death Date: 7/5/2001
Washington Park East Cemetery
President #2, Section W 19, Level 4, Crypt 248A

Alma Eleanor White was born September 8, 1926 to George and Christine Schmitt in Zeeland, North Dakota. She attended Zeeland High School and graduated in 1944. She left Zeeland during wartime and visited the Katie Werner Farm in Edgar, Wisconsin. Later she moved to Wausau, Wisconsin in search of employment. Alma married Roy M. White on June 1, 1946 at Grace Evangelical & Reformed Church in Wausau, Wisconsin, where they began married life and Roy began his career with Wausau Insurance Companies. Their first child Kay was born in Wausau. Their association with Wausau Insurance Companies took them to Indianapolis where they raised three children, Kay, Lloyd and Peggy. Alma and her husband moved in and around Indianapolis several times over the years that followed, including several years at their Sweetwater Lake home in Brown County which she thoroughly enjoyed. Alma and Roy were active in supporting and 'building' St. Paul (Ellenberger) United Church of Christ in Indianapolis. She was also active as a reading tutor in the Indianapolis Public Schools for a period that spanned 17 years. As a tutor, through her own charity and personal investment, Alma provided an opportunity for kids to grow, learn and know the world. Countless numbers of young people over the years benefited from her investment in them.Through their early retirement years, she and her husband traveled cross the country in their recreational vehicle, visiting family, friends and new places, all of which they enjoyed. In later retirement, Alma and Roy shared their time between Indianapolis and Naples, Florida, where they wintered, enjoying the sun, sea, abundant fresh fruit and vegetables. Alma will be remembered in so many ways. She was a most loving wife, mother, grandmother and mother-in-law who will always be remembered as an accomplished cook, baker and jam maker. She will be especially remembered for her kindness, her consideration, her ever-present thoughtfulness and her caring demeanor. Alma has always put herself before others, a model of the act of unselfishness. In this vein, she and her husband have sacrificed personally so her children could have what they needed. She also had a unique eye for quality and wanted her children to share in that. Alma has never doubted; what her family and children could accomplish she and Roy always provided encouragement, not doubt; support and not questioning. This was a wonderful form of nurturing, for which her children are greatly appreciative. Alma has always had an interest in everything. She was always eager to learn and open to expose herself to new and different things and experiences. When visiting with people, family or friends, she lived in the moment, giving them her individual attention and was there for them, this, a unique skill in today's hustling oriented world. She never failed to make folks feel welcome and at home. She will be remembered, for her radiance and her beautiful smile and as a very special lady. Alma will be sadly missed, but not forgotten by her family and friends and she will always be with them in their hearts and prayers.
