Born in Carisolo, Italy, December 21,1920 to Vito Modesto Povinelli and Pierina Ambrosi. He came to America in 1934 to join his father, who immigrated here earlier and started a knife sharpening business. He was thirteen and a half years old when he arrived. He immediately started sharpening knives, which he continued to do for sixty-six years. In 1942, he was drafted into the Army to fight in WW 2, with Company C of the 26th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division. While serving, he was wounded and received a Purple Heart Medal. While in the Army he graduated from Military Intelligence School in Fort Richie, Maryland and Swinden, England. He left the army in December 1945. In 1948, Pete married Mary Ann Shea, the girl next door. They moved to their house on Spann Avenue, where they live happily married for 52 years. They had four children, Sandy, Joe, John and Mark. Pete and Mary also raised two foster children Ola Powell and Joann Hinds. Pete loved flowers and trees and enjoyed working in his yard. He had a great love for his family and his country. He served as Post Commander VFW Post 2999, and of the 11th District. He was State and Post Hospital Chairman for 20 years, doing volunteer work at the Richard Roundbush VA Hospital and the Cold Springs Road Hospital. He was appointed National Aide the Camp in 1959. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, after retiring in 1999; he became a volunteer with the Marion County Burial Association, helping with Military Funerals. He was also a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, where he was Head Usher at Sunday Mass and also a Eucharistic Minister. |
