Gordon W. Davis

Birth Date: 5/26/1934
Death Date: 4/8/2001
Washington Park East Cemetery
Garden of Reflections, Lot 108D. Grave 3

Father, Husband, Friend. Gordon was born on Denny Street in Brightwood, a suburb of Indianapolis, in the early summer of 1934. It was, he liked to point out, the hottest summer on record. A lifelong Hoosier, Gordon spent two years in the United States Army 1956-1958, serving as a motor pool corporal near Munsan in Korea where, he was pleased to note, 'He was shot at only once.' Some years later Gordon, now a concrete finisher, met Kayrene McClaran. On their first date they went to a movie: 'It was,' Gordon said, 'like sitting next to an angel.' Gordon and Kay married in 1966. The couple and their two children, Mark and Christina, lived on Layman Street in Indianapolis until 1976, when they moved to Oaklandon. Soon after, Gordon's health began to decline. What to say about Dad? Though a large man, toughened by outdoor labor, he was kind and gentle. He was unthinkingly generous-helping with money he couldn't afford to part with; repairing an acquaintance's car or furnishing a relative with a temporary home. He loved animals and no stray cat ever went unfed. If given his way, Dad would readily have been every kid's father. He could enthrall every child in the neighborhood with a tall tale about his childhood dog, Blackie. Then he'd make popcorn to eat as we all watched silent Keystone Cops or Laurel and Hardy comedies projected onto the living room wall by Dad's Browning 8mm. Every weekend brought a one-tank trip to some nearby but wondrous destination. Squire Boone's Cavern or Spring Mill State Park. Dad smoked Vantage cigarettes, drank bottled Cocoa Cola, and loved pork chops with mashed potatoes smothered in brown gravy. For dessert, cookies drowned in milk, eaten with a spoon from a tall kitchen glass. He loved IU Basketball with a consuming passion, and if an IU Championship made him happy for weeks, an IU loss plunged him into a foul mood for hours. Dad loved the outdoors, the silence and stillness of nature. He would tell of past Thanksgiving meals that had been made from the trunk loads of squirrel and rabbit he, his brothers and brothers-in-law had shot just after sunup, when the frost was still thick on the grass. He loved to hunt and to fish, and some of his best, funniest and dearest stories were simple tales of hunting with his friends or fishing alone after a day of hard work. We all got to know those stories as well as he knew them himself. For that, we are lucky. Dad, we miss you.
