Robert was born June 18, 1929 in Sardis, Kentucky. His father, Lee Conner Pugh, was a farmer, his mother, Bertie Virginia, was a housewife. He was the oldest of five children. Robert had one sister, Helen Doretha and three brothers, Ernest Wayne, Darrell Winston and Steven Paul. Robert met Ietta Marie Burris at a movie theater in Maysville, Kentucky. The couple married on April 8, 1950. Robert fathered five children with Marie, Robert Wayne, Stanley Lee, Teresa Ann, Connie Doretha and Pamela Gail. He enlisted in the Air Force on May 16, 1949, served in Korea and had an honorable discharge on December 23, 1952.On his returning to Maysville, he was employed by Walds Manufacturing Company. He moved his family to Indiana where Detroit Allison hired him in August 1955. Robert retired from Allison in February 1988, after thirty-three years of service. He worked part-time five years delivering flowers for Queen Ann's Lace before suffering the first of many strokes. On April 8, 2000, Robert and Marie celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Their children hosted an elaborate celebration for the couple at Westglen Clubhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. Robert joined the Speedway Masonic Lodge in 1960 and the American Legion Post #500 in 1988. He remained a member until his passing. He enjoyed bowling, playing golf and cads. He coached a youth baseball team, the Sioux, from 1960-1963. His sons were members of the team. He worshiped at the Spirit of Life in Clermont, Indiana. One block from his home of twenty-seven years, he often used a cane to walk there on Sundays. Robert was baptized July 15, 1998, his wife and daughters bearing witness. His wife, five children, nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren survive him. His parents, sister Helen, brother Ernest and great-granddaughter Lexi Jo, preceded him in death. |
