At 6'3', loud and boisterous, John could be an imposing figure. His family and friends knew otherwise. Born in Chicago and raised in New Buffalo Michigan, John loved the beaches and learned to fish in Lake Michigan and Galien River. After high school, he joined the Marine Corp and gave 11 years from 1956 to 1967 for his country. He served two terms in Vietnam and received the Purple Heart before returning home. If he had a wish, it was to go to China and then he could have said that he had been around the world. Back home, in New Buffalo at St. Mary of the Lake, John married Candace M. Helms on April 27, 1968.
For better or worse, they moved to Indianapolis where they raised three children, Rhonda, Sandra and John. John was a devout Catholic with a deep sense of honor, responsibility, duty and country, which he carried with him through life. He spent 24 years at Chrysler Corp. to support and care for his family. Upon retiring in 1991, he became more active in the VFW and American Legion. He was a commander of the VFW Post 1120 for 2 separate terms, 1993-1994 and 1996-1997. |
