Born on October 13, 1921, the middle child and only girl to May and William Hinkley. She graduated from Ben Davis High School in 1939. Her first marriage to Albert Lucas McCray took place on Feb 21, 1940 and produced two daughters, Ruth May and Alice Louise, Albert L McCray died in 1945. She married James C. Thomas on March 4, 1946 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her and James produced three children, David Allen, Sueann Marie, Kathy Lynn. James and Stella remained married until his death in 1993. Stella also had nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She worked for RCA Corporation for 37 years and was recording secretary for the union for many years. She retired in 1980. She enjoyed camping, fishing, roses and traveling. She was also an avid dog lover. Some of her travels took her to Nebraska with her son & family and to California a brother and his family. In 1984, Stella and Jim relocated to Harlingen, Texas where they lived for 16 years. They made many friends there as they enjoyed 'Friday Pot Luck Dinners', rummage sales, bingo, holiday dinners which fed over 100 people, trips to Mexico to shop and just life in general. Stella had battled lung cancer for 6 years and could no longer live alone. She moved to Jacksonville, Florida in December 2000 with her grandson and his family where she lived the last 8 weeks of her life. She passed away on March 4, 2001, which would have been her 55th Wedding Anniversary. |
