Dorothy was born in Indianapolis, Indiana at Methodist Hospital. Having no children, Olin and Hazel Rittenhouse of Liberty Center, Indiana applied to adopt Dorothy when she was only 6 weeks old.

She attended Liberty Center High from the 1st thru the 12th Grades. She was an excellent student and played the trumpet and trombone in the school band. She also won the County Typing Contest while in high school. She started accompanying the church choir as pianist and organist at the age of nine.

After high school she attended Arthur Jorden Conservatory of Music in Indianapolis. She married Charles Gavin in January, 1943 and then in February 1944 had her only child. She was a music teacher most of her adult life.

She was a member of the National Association of Organ Teachers, The National Music Association, Inc. and the Indiana Music Teachers Association, Inc.
