Death Date: 2/1/2001
Washington Park North Cemetery
Eternal Liberty, 343B, Grave 3

A teacher more than 24 years. Mr. Romby taught auto body repair at a government school in Terre Haute Indiana early in his teaching career. After coming to Indianapolis, he taught auto body repair at a school extension in Wayne Township and for Chrispus Attucks High School. He retired from the J. Everett Light Career Center in Washington Township in 1982. During WWII, he trained as an aviation cadet at the Tuskegee Alabama Army Air Field and was one of the original Tuskegee Airmen. The group broke the color barrier in the military by being the first group of black pilots to fly combat missions. During their service in WWII, the Tuskegee Airmen did not lose a single bomber to enemy aircraft. A talented vocalist, Mr. Romby sang lead baritone with Tuskegee Airmen Cadet Chorus and later sang in Pops concerts with the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra. He also was a member and featured soloist of the Witherspoon Church Choir. Mr. Romby was a graduate of Indiana State University. Jack was loved and respected by his family. Everyone knew him by his music. When Jack sang, one would cry or breakout in goose bumps. His voice was so powerful the church windows would rattle when he sang.
