Gerald A. Kihl was born in Cheektowaga, New York. Jerry grew up on the family farm with parents, George and Ceil, and grandparents. He had younger sisters, Joyce and Joan who were twins. He attended grade school in Cheektowaga and high school in Lancaster, New York. In high school Jerry was on the football team and the rifle team. Shortly after graduating high school in 1945, he enlisted in the US Army at age 17. Having enlisted during W.W.II, he was one of the first recipients of the G.I. Bill and attended Paul Smith's College in the Adirondack Mountains for two years. He then finished his education at the University of Michigan earning a degree in Forestry in 1950. As a college student at Paul Smith's, he was captain of the snow ski team, a wrestler and a member of the rifle team. In 1952 Jerry married Shirley Mackenburg. Their first daughter, Cheryl, was born in 1953. Shortly after the family moved to Richmond, Virginia where Jerry worked for Osmose Wood Preserving Co. as a manager for seven years. While in Virginia he had two more daughters, Michelle and Gwen. In 1963 the family moved to Indianapolis where Jerry took a fob with Public Service of Indiana as a manager of right of way maintenance. By 1970 Jerry and Shirley built a beautiful home and added one last daughter, Jerri Lynn, to the family. As a nature enthusiast, being outside was among Jerry's biggest pleasures. He loved to work in the yard doing his own landscaping. Throughout the years he enjoyed camping with the family, hunting and fishing with his biddies and later sons in law. |
